Postmodern Era benchmark. XC-SPI defines the Postmodern Era (Super-Shoe Era onward) as 2020-present. The 2020 season is retained but explicitly flagged as the COVID-disrupted season. The historical model asks a different question from the Power Ranking: how did NCAA teams with a similar scoring profile tend to finish the following season?
What this is not. Historical Success does not replace the 2026 Preseason Score and does not use school prestige as an input. It uses four simple profile features – five-runner team score, first scorer, fifth scorer, and the gap from fifth to seventh – standardized within sex and season. The strict training window uses 2020-2024 championship profiles to predict 2021-2025 outcomes; no pre-2020 result trains the benchmark.
Three rankings can disagree
Power Ranking asks who has the strongest current preseason roster score. Historical Success Ranking asks which current profile most resembles Postmodern Era profiles that later reached the podium and top 10. Championship Odds will eventually come from the calibrated current-athlete simulator. Agreement is useful; disagreement is information.

What changes in 2026?
The men remain broadly aligned with the Power Ranking, although Colorado has a stronger historical title profile than its No. 5 Power position suggests. The women move more: West Virginia rises in Historical Success, while Iowa State falls from No. 3 in Power to No. 10 in Historical Success because its current scoring shape is much more front-loaded than the Postmodern profiles that most reliably converted to podium finishes. Arkansas also grades much better historically than its central Preseason Score rank. None of those moves rewrites the Power Ranking.
COVID-season sensitivity
The main benchmark retains the 2020 profile because the era is defined from 2020 onward, but the model is rerun without that source season. The 2026 ordering is highly stable under that check: the men’s podium ordering is unchanged and the largest title-order changes are small; the women’s ordering is also strongly stable, with only limited movement in the sparse title outcome.
